Industry Rise: Superhard Materials Industry Research Report
18.03.2022

Superhard material industry is in the development period, the prospect is broad

Superhard materials refer to materials whose hardness can be compared with that of diamond.

Superhard material is an important engineering material, usually refers to the hardness of the highest value of Mohs hardness 10 or close to 10 materials, mainly used in composite materials, inorganic non-metallic materials, cemented carbide processing, as an important functional materials. At present, the common superhard materials are diamond (natural diamond and artificial diamond), cubic boron nitride and so on.

At present, the common superhard materials are diamond (natural diamond and artificial diamond), cubic boron nitride (PCBN) and so on. PCBN has high hardness, high wear resistance and high temperature performance stability, mainly used in the manufacture of various types of cutting tools; diamond is divided into monocrystalline diamond, polycrystalline diamond (PCD) and CVD diamond, monocrystalline diamond is used in grinding wheels, saw blades, etc., PCD is used in cutting tools, petroleum drilling bits, CVD diamond is used in wire drawing dies, cutting tools, etc., and high-end CVD diamond is used in the field of electronic devices, aerospace and other fields. High-end CVD diamond is used in electronic devices, aerospace and other fields. Superhard materials can also be classified as single crystal superhard materials and polycrystalline superhard materials (also known as "composite superhard materials"), single crystal superhard materials include single crystal diamond, single crystal cubic boron nitride, etc., which are characterized by high hardness but small dimensions; polycrystalline diamond/cubic boron nitride is made of mono-crystalline diamond/cubic boron nitride as the main raw material, with the addition of metal and non-metallic bonding agent. Non-metallic bonding agent in the high temperature and high pressure environment made of composite materials, composite superhard materials, although the hardness and heat resistance is slightly worse, but its cutting area is larger, better wear resistance.

Composite superhard materials are mainly used in oil and gas, coal mine, automobile and so on. Polycrystalline diamond for oil and gas is synthesized by mixing small diamond particles and adhesive with cutting layer and cemented carbide backing layer sintered under high temperature and high pressure, the material has high strength, hardness and wear resistance, and the material is embedded in oil and gas drilling bit, which is the core part of the drill bit that plays a role in cutting and digging.
